Websites for Kids
Welcome! This site is all about websites for kids that are safe.
This site does not collect any information from it's visitors.

Kids.gov is the official kids' portal for the U.S. government.

It links to over 1,200 web pages from government agencies, schools, and educational organizations, all geared to the learning level and interest of kids. Kids.gov is maintained by the Federal Citizen Information Center (FCIC), those folks in Pueblo, CO 81009.

For parents: Kids.gov is a gateway that takes your children to other sites. The majority of the links are from other government sites, but we do link to commercial and other non-government sites. Although many of the sites we link to must adhere to Federal rules established to protect children's privacy, please understand that not all sites have to comply with these rules.

While we have selected sites that we believe offer good, reliable information, we are not responsible for the content provided. Nor are we responsible for their adherence to Federal rules to protect children's privacy. It is important that you monitor your children's online communication to ensure that they do not provide personally identifiable information to websites that you feel are unacceptable. Tell your children to ask you or another adult to look at what they are doing first if they wish to give their name, address, phone number, or email address.

Kids.gov is organized into three audiences: Grades K-5, Grades 6-8, and Educators.

Each audience tab is divided into educational subjects like Arts, Math, and History. Within each subject, the websites are grouped as either government sites (Federal, state, military) or other resources (commercial, non-profit, educational).

The sites listed under the other resources category are maintained by other public and private organizations. When users click on these links, they are leaving Kids.gov and are subject to the privacy and security policies of the owners/sponsors of the outside websites.

YahooKids.com - Yahooligans.com

Yahoo! Kids (formerly Yahooligans) is Yahoo!'s web portal for kids. It is a walled garden of hand-selected content and databases tailored for younger Internet users. All entries in its directory are screened by Yahoo! employees for appropriate content. The site also hosts games, e-cards, movie schedules, a daily advice/information column, and educational resources for parents and teachers.

Internet Safety for Kids

There are some very important things that you need to keep in mind when you're on your computer at home or at school.

  • First, remember never to give out personal information such as your name, home address, school name, or telephone number in a chat room or on bulletin boards. Also, never send a picture of yourself to someone you chat with on the computer without your parent's permission. Web Credibility

  • Never write to someone who has made you feel uncomfortable or scared.

  • Do not meet someone or have them visit you without the permission of your parents.

  • Tell your parents right away if you read anything on the Internet that makes you feel uncomfortable.

  • Remember that people online may not be who they say they are. Someone who says that "she" is a "12-year-old girl" could really be an older man.

Parents Should:

Look for a privacy policy on any website directed to children.

The policy must be available through a link on the website's homepage and at each area where personal information is collected from kids. Websites for general audiences that have a children's section must post the notice on the homepages of the section for kids.

Read the policy closely to learn the kinds of personal information being collected, how it will be used, and whether it will be passed on to third parties. If you find a website that doesn't post basic protections for children's personal information, ask for details about their information collection practices.

Decide whether to give consent.

Giving consent authorizes the website to collect personal information from your child. You can give consent and still say no to having your child's information passed along to a third party.

Your consent isn't necessary if the website is collecting your child's email address simply to respond to a one-time request for information.
